Who

Musikräven is made by Rickard Javanainen, a web developer in Mjölby, Sweden, who got tired of music quizzes where the host has to juggle Spotify, a scoreboard and a stopwatch at once. The site is a hobby project in Sweden that has grown: it started as one room with a code, and today has three games, daily challenges and 19 ready-made playlists.

Musikräven has no investors, no ads in the game and sells no data on. What we store about you, and why, is on the page about personal data.

Built by Studio Javanainen

Musikräven is designed and built by Studio Javanainen, Rickard's web studio in Mjölby, Sweden, which makes websites for businesses. The same craft goes into both: pages are rendered on the server, the site is in Swedish and English, and every game view is tested automatically at five screen widths, from 320 to 1,440 pixels. Where the songs come from

The clips are Apple Music's public previews: 30 seconds per song, fetched from Apple's catalogue when the song plays. Musikräven owns no music and uploads none – so no Spotify, Apple Music or app is needed to play. The playlists are curated by us, checked against the hit catalogue (Swedish and international charts since the 1960s) and tagged with genre, year and difficulty so every playlist can pull the right songs.

The marking is our own: it tolerates small typos, knows that “21 Pilots” and “Twenty One Pilots” are the same answer, and scores you on how fast you answer. How the points are counted is in the rules.

Three games

• Fox Ear – guess the song in as few seconds as possible.
• Music Quiz – hear a clip, type the artist and title before time runs out.
• The Timeline – place the songs correctly in time.

All three can be played solo, as today's challenge in the Fox League, or as a host with the party around the big screen. The first round is free of an account; after that a free account is needed so results and streaks are saved. Room guests never need an account.
