What's typical for Old School Rap
Old School Rap runs from Sugarhill Gang in 1979 to 2009 – hip hop's first three decades, with the 90s and 00s as the focus. Eminem, 2Pac, Kanye West, JAY-Z, Run-D.M.C. and 50 Cent are the artists that come up most often, and the list stops where “old school” ends: nothing from the 2010s onward.
The level is Medium. The hits are there, but rap is harder to guess in half a second than pop – the intro is often a beat, not a melody – so the list favours anyone who's actually listened rather than just heard the chorus at a party.
Good for the hip hop crew, 90s nostalgics, and groups who want a music quiz without a single guitar solo. Want newer rap? It's mixed in with the pop in Pop Right Now.
